Post Spawn

The Post Spawn period runs from the end of the spawn until the bass recover from spawning and settled into their summer pattern.  If the end of that sounds kind of nebulous that’s because it is, it varies with the conditions, and the time it occurs will vary around the lake.

Immediately after spawning, bass can be difficult to catch, particularly the females.  The males are guarding the fry and will strike readily at anything that threatens them.  If you catch these males return them quickly so they can protect their fry.

The larger females will retreat to the closest cover (weeds, dock, boats, etc.) to rebuild their strength, they will eat but for some amount of time they will be too weak to chase baits so you pretty much have to put your bait on their noses.

Try weightless texas rigged Senkos type worms, jig & pig, texas rigged worms or carolina rigs on the weed line where the water drops from shallow (3 feet or less) to deeper and around docks and boats.

Once the fry are big enough to go it on their own & the females have regained their strength the fish will start chasing baits aggressively, top water baits (especially in the early morning), swimming frogs, spinner baits & crank baits will work well at this time as will the worms and jigs.  This period which typically occurs in June on Lake Shannon is the best time to catch large numbers of bass.

Once the weeds are killed off the top water bite will slow down substantially but other techniques will continue to produce.
