The Largemouth Bass are one of the most abundant and easiest species of fish to catch on Lake Shannon.

Bass are moody; sometimes they are willing to chase stuff and equally willing to eat baits that appear right in front of them.  Other times they will do only one or the other, these moods are often dictated by seasons & weather conditions.

Largemouths like to ambush their prey; consequently they will often be hiding behind anything they can use as “cover” to conceal themselves.  This can be obvious things like rocks or stumps or subtle things like shade, muddy water, or slight depressions in the bottom.

In general baits that will be worked slowly (jigs, worms, etc) should be darker and more natural in color since the fish will have long time to study them.  Fast moving baits, often referred to as reaction baits, can be bright and flashy.  But don’t be afraid to experiment with colors, Lake Shannon’s dark waters are very forgiving and doing something new may produce good results.

Within a seasonal pattern, moods can be affected by conditions.  Bright sun combined with calm water make fish very nervous because they know they can be easily seen by predators.  In these conditions reaction baits may not produce well.  Conversely, cloud cover or chop on the surface created by wind will make fish more comfortable and more willing to chase reaction baits.

There are times when bass will only strike reaction baits.  These times occur when bass just don’t want to eat for some reason (just after a cold front for ex.).  Much like a cat that will swipe at a ball that is rolled past them even though they won’t play with one just lying in front of them, non feeding bass sometimes can’t help but make a reactive strike at a bait that flashes by them.

Most experienced bass fishermen plan their approach based on seasonal patterns, click the links below for tips for fishing for Lake Shannon largemouths during each season:
